Curriculum changes, additions, deletions and revisions for the 2023-24 school year were approved by the Neenah Joint School District Board of Education at its Dec. 6 meeting.
Many of the adoptions were necessary due to the changes in grade structure for the upcoming school year. Included in the changes is the addition of four-year-old kindergarten and sixth grade programming at Alliance Charter Elementary. At the middle school, physical education will participate in a mixed-grade level experience with a two-year spiraling curriculum. A Spanish for Middle School Heritage Learners course has also been added to assist native speakers. Other revisions were approved in family and consumer education, science and social studies. For the high school, five new courses are being added in physical education. AP Physics 1 is also proposed to complement the current offerings.
The Board also reviewed a proposal for 2023 summer school offerings. The elementary academy, middle and high school courses will run June 5-30 to be completed in time for the move to new buildings, but will still satisfy the minimum minutes requirement to receive state funding. Some elementary enrichment courses will be offered in week-long sessions in August. The middle school has added Reading and Writing Workshop and Math Support options and will continue to offer a full slate of enrichment classes. The high school will have a morning and afternoon session and will offer Advanced Placement, ACT prep and college prep courses.
In action items, the Board approved hires for Keisha Stuart as a cross categorical teacher at Roosevelt, Lizbeth Epling as an educational assistant at Shattuck and Constance Sullivan as an educational assistant at Washington. An end-of-school year retirement was approved for District Director of Instructional Technology Matt Anderson and a resignation was approved for Hoover educational assistant Rachel Derginer, effective Dec. 6. A number of Board policies were approved in a variety of areas.
The Board also recognized the advisors, performers and technical crew from the one-act play “Back Cover” for their awards received at the Wisconsin Theatre Festival in November.
The next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 20 at 6 p.m.
