Neenah Joint School District residents will see their tax mill rate drop 68 cents for the upcoming year after the Board of Education approved its 2022-23 budget at its November 1 meeting.
The District will still tax the maximum amount allowed under state law and collect the same amount in revenues as last year. However, the burden on local taxpayers has decreased due to four main factors: no allowable increase in the revenue limit, increased local property values, increased state aid and the infusion of Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds. The mill rate is actually lower than the $6.86 mill rate in 2019-20, which was prior to the passing of the $114.9 million referendum in April 2020.
In other action, the Board approved a sale of 15.7 acres of property on Jacobson Road in Fox Crossing. The property was purchased 50 years ago with the intention of a possible elementary school, but the District will sell it for $460,000, which is an increase of $10,000 from the original offer.
The Board approved the immediate resignation of Roosevelt teacher Alexandria Schroeder, but denied a request to waive the resignation fee. A resignation for Taft educational assistant Gretchen Smolarek was approved, effective Nov. 15, and end-of-school year retirements were approved for Lori Marsden from Spring Road and Susan Michlig from Hoover.
The Board received a report reviewing the 2022 summer school programs. In-person offerings were provided at all levels with a virtual option at the high school. The enrollment numbers were in line with five-year trends at all levels.
The next meeting will be held on November 15 at 6 p.m.
