The 2 percent threshold for masking during summer school has been removed by action of the Neenah Joint School District Board of Education at its June 7 meeting.
Masks will be optional for all summer school students throughout the summer. During the school year, students were required to wear masks if 2 percent of their school enrollment had positive cases. The recommendation is based on low rates of COVID-19 among students and the desire to begin shifting to a choice educational setting. The Board also approved allowing students to return to school on the sixth day after a positive test. Students will be required to wear masks for five days upon return, based on CDC guidelines.
A proposal for 2022-23 student fees was tabled until the next meeting on June 20. The proposal does not account for any changes in student fees, though there is a slight increase proposed for lunch and breakfast due to increased food prices. The proposal was tabled because the Board would like information regarding the potential of helping all students have the opportunity to purchase a yearbook. The Board discussed possibly adding some of the cost to student fees or providing a discount rate for lower income families.
Teaching hires approved included Aimee Stevens and Robin Wagner as elementary math interventionists, Shawna Smith and Amanda Strupp as elementary literacy interventionists, Mikayla Uchytil and April Ellestad at the high school, Paige Eisen at Spring Road, Sarah Gallenberg at Washington and Sherry Gonwa at Lakeview.
Non-certified staff hires include Achraf Briki as a help desk technician, Jane Coenen as administrative assistant to the superintendent and Betsy Tesch in operations at Roosevelt/Alliance. Educational assistants hired include Wendy Good at Coolidge, Carolyn Janssen at Lakeview, Sarah Heller at Spring Road and Linda Dums at Horace Mann.
Immediate resignations were accepted for Julie Guerin, Katy Massot and Jordan Wunderlich at Taft, Meghan Ray at the secondary level, Lisa Johnson at Roosevelt/Alliance. A resignation for benefits specialist Jennifer Carstens, effective June 17.
The Board also recognized retiring administrators Steve Dreger and Tim Gantz on their employment with the District. Outgoing District medical advisor Dr. Todd McKenzie was also recognized for his service over the past eight years, particularly during the pandemic.
It was reiterated that the second meeting in June will be held on Monday, June 20 at 6 p.m. due to a scheduling conflict.
