Lessons and materials for the Human Growth and Development curriculum for grades 6-12 were approved by the Neenah Joint School District Board of Education at its Nov. 6 meeting.
Some Board members expressed concern over some of the materials that were included in the curriculum and some materials that were not included. In the end, the Board approved the curriculum by a 6-3 vote.
The Board also needed to approve the 2018-19 budget and tax levy certification due to an data entry error that was discovered after the budget and tax levy were originally approved on Oct. 16. The final mill rate for 2018-19 will be $7.28 per $1,000 of property value.
Much of the meeting was used to discuss the curriculum additions, deletions and revisions (CADR) for 2019-20. One of the primary discussions centered around a proposal to allow students who participate in a varsity or junior varsity sport to take a half-credit of physical education in another core subject area. Several physical education teachers spoke out about the proposal. Another key change adds the completion of one post-secondary, credit-yielding course to the graduation requirements. Additional changes include an update to the accelerated math progression at the middle and high school levels and an elimination of some prerequisites at the high school level to allow students more flexibility.
The CADR proposal also includes a change to the Neenah High School schedule that would maintain seven classes per semester, but change them to 90 minute classes that rotate between days. An academic and career planning time is also added to provide more flexibility to the schedule.
All of the CADR proposals will be voted upon at the next meeting on Nov. 20.
The hire of Christopher Cummings as custodian at Spring Road was approved along with end-of-school year retirements for high school teacher Ken Gilmeister and Coolidge teacher Jim Karrmann.
The Board honored the varsity boys cross country team for its WIAA state championship.
