Neenah High School senior Colin Enz became the school's first boys track and field individual state champion in 20 years by capturing the 400-meter dash title on Saturday in La Crosse.
Enz posted a time of 49.03 seconds to edge Pewaukee's David Young by 0.08 seconds. Enz also had the best qualifying time in the event on Friday at 49.00 seconds.
He is the Rockets' first individual state champion since Joe Fahrenkrug won the 800-meter run in 1998. The 3200-meter relay team also won the state title that year. Enz is Neenah's first champion in the 400-meter dash. Jack Mansfield won the equivalent 440-yard dash in 1950.
Enz also anchored the Rockets' 1600-meter relay team that placed second in 3:21.94. He was joined by Sam Jung, Jack VanDyke and Ethan Blaney on the relay.
Matt Meinke added a runner-up finish in the 3200-meter run and a fifth place finish in the 1600-meter run as Neenah amassed 30 team points to post its highest finish in recent years at fifth place.
