SIGHT WORD PRACTICE W/ LUCKY CARDS:
The Lucky Card technique can be used with any type of drill and practice activity. Kids get an Uno card when they read their sight word correctly. If a wrong answer is given, the word and Uno card go to the teacher. The Uno cards are marked with stickers that make them the “lucky” cards. After reading the sight words, the students get to look to at their Uno cards to see who was lucky that day.
The teacher can collect data such as percentage of words correct by counting the words each child missed while the kids are looking for their “lucky cards.”
Parents might entice their child to practice with the promise of a quick game of Uno after the drill work. This works great for math facts or anything that is being memorized.
Feel free to use any cards, just make some “lucky.” (Choose one card and put several stickers on it, making it the “super lucky” card. Put one sticker on five other cards, making them “lucky.”) I have been using this technique for about eight years and no one ever says, “I’m tired of the lucky card game.”
