NJSD to Host 13 Reasons Why Discussion
|
The Neenah Joint School District, in conjunction with Post-Crescent Media, will host a panel discussion for parents, staff, students and concerned community members to address the issues raised by the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why and to talk about ways to prevent suicide and build resilience for children. The event takes place on Thursday, May 25 at 7 p.m. in the Neenah High School Cafeteria. Speakers on the panel will include mental health experts with expertise in suicide prevention as well as students with lived mental health experience.
The recent Netflix series 13 Reasons Why has raised concerns among school personnel and suicide prevention experts. Many kids are binge watching without adult guidance and support, which could raise the risks for suicide for some of our youth. The series graphically depicts a suicide death and rape. In addition, several difficult topics are addressed including cyberbullying, drunk driving, objectifying and shaming girls and revenge fantasies.
Youth who are experiencing difficult emotions benefit from messages of hope that also give them strategies and resources for helping them through difficult times. Youth often miss these messages in shows such as 13 Reasons Why that sensationalize serious topics such as suicide.
Come join us on May 25 to learn how we can replace messages of shock and despair with voices of validation and hope for our youth. The event will also be streamed live and archived on postcrescent.com.
More information is also available at the event's Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/events/1908147619428899/

Wellness Updates
|
Congratulations to NJSD staff who completed the SoleBurner on May 13 and helped raise money for a great cause. Also congrats to staff members who ran the Green Bay Marathon events over the past weekend and the seven Neenah High School Runner's High students who participated.
Meg Gross and Julie Buss completed the Sole Burner Couch to 5k Training Program and Race on May 13. Meg and Julie not only consistently showed up for training, but also surrounded each other with support and empowerment each and every week. Way to go Healthy Heroes! Those interested in participating in a similar program for a future 5K should reach out to Wellness Coordinator Sara Moore.

Be Aware of More Phishing Scams
|
In the past few days, NJSD has experienced a different type of Phishing Scam. Below is the text included in two of the messages. These are not legitimate. While there isn't a link to click and they don't seem harmful on the surface, it is a waste of time and resources if staff AND students continue to forward them on.
Please remember, NJSD is required by law to archive all email for seven years. That includes internal, as well as external, and includes all staff and student email. When SPAM and Phishing or any other email is forwarded and/or re-circulated, every version, to every person, of every one of those individual email are required by law to be saved for seven years.
Following are the latest examples:
"Good Morning, I'm writing this with tears in my eyes, my family and i came down here to Marseille on a short trip. Unfortunately we were mugged at the park of the hotel where we stayed all cash,? ?credit card and mobile phone were stolen off us but luckily we still have our passports with us. I made contact with my bank but it would take me 5 working days to access funds in my account,? ?the bad news is our flight will be leaving in less than 8-hrs from now but we're having problems settling the hotel bills and the hotel manager won't let us leave until we settle the bills. I'll need your help financially and i promise to make the refund once we get back home, Please let me know if i can count on you and i need you to keep checking your email because it's the only way i can reach you."
"My name is Carmen Winstead. I'm 17 years old. I am very similar to you... Did I mention to you that I'm dead. A few years ago a group of girls pushed me down a sewer hole to try and embarrass me. When I didn't come back up the police came. The girls said that I had fell and everyone believed them. The police found my body in the sewer. I had a broken neck and my face was torn off. Send this message to 15 people after you read the whole message if you value your life! A boy called David received this message. He just laughed and deleted it. When he was in the shower he heard laughing... MY LAUGHTER! He got really scared, rushed to his phone to repost this message... But he was too late. The next morning his mum entered his bedroom and all she found was a message written in his blood saying, "You will never have him back!" No one has found his body yet... because he is with me! A girl called Charlotte received this message and she immediately sent it to 25 people (10 more than required). I still watch over every second of her life to make sure that she is safe and to keep her and everyone close to her out of danger. Send this to 15 people in the next 5 minutes if you don't want your fate to be the same as David's. Your time starts... NOW!"
